Professional Range Has Landed

This range has been months in development and we are over the moon that these professional standard products are now available.

Martin worked with a local paint manufacturer on the specifications for each of the range and was guided by their years of experience. Each of the samples was tested on open grain and tight grained wood before Martin signed-off on each of the products.

The result is a range of products that Hampshire Sheen is happy to call ‘Professional’.

A neat feature of the labels is a description of the piece on the front of the can. You could call it a ‘Serving Suggestion!

Also featuring on the label is a QR code that links directly to the How-To page on the website here.

Pro Clear Gloss Lacquer

Our Professional Clear Gloss Lacquer has been specially formulated to produce a deep gloss finish for interior or exterior projects in just two to four coats.

Dry and handleable in 10 to 20 minutes under normal conditions, it is possible to produce glass-like finishes within hours of application. Drying time may vary depending on ambient temperature and humidity.

For a simple gloss finish, two coats will generally be enough over a properly sealed surface. Use our Professional Sealer Spray for best results. For a glass-like finish, we recommend at least four coats and then polish with pastes and creams.

Overcoat with our Microcrystalline Wax for a smooth feeling and fingerprint resistant top coat. Use in combination with our Intrinsic Colour Collection, sealers, oils and waxes to create your own finishing regime.

Basic Application:
This lacquer will produce a high strength gloss finish. These are the basic steps to get started.
– Sand your work down to at least 400 grit and ensure surface is free from dust, grease and moisture;
– Prepare the surface with a suitable sealer and ensure it has fully dried.
– Shake can with the cap on for at least two minutes before use. Protect lathe and surfaces;
– Avoid breathing spray – Use appropriate PPE and use in a well ventilated area;
– Apply light coats 200mm from the piece, giving time for the lacquer to dry between coats. Two to four coats is usually sufficient;
– Lightly cut back the lacquer between dry coats for an even finish;
– Under normal conditions, this Professional Lacquer can be mechanically buffed in under 3 hours.
– For a glass-like finish, use abrasive pastes and creams according to manufacturers instructions.

Two good coats of this satin lacquer should be enough to provide a suitably solid finish on most wooden surfaces. It will conform to grain and texture patterns exceptionally well without hiding them.
Apply some of the Intrinsic Colour Collection dyes to your work before using this to produce an elegantly coloured and finished piece.
For the best possible finish, always ensure that the surface you are applying it to is perfectly smooth, free from dust, scratches and properly sealed.

Pro Matt Sanding Sealer (Cellulose)

Our Professional Matt Cellulose Sanding Sealer Spray can be used on a variety of surfaces, not just wood. It has been formulated for us to produce a tough surface for our finishes to adhere to.
Non-darkening, the spray is ideal for use over applied colours like the Intrinsic Colour Collection. Without having to wipe or brush on the sealer, you can be sure there will be no further bleeding or blending of the colours.
Dry in 5 – 15 minutes, this product works best when cut back, or lightly sanded either between coats, or after the final coat for a smooth surface to accept your final finish. Drying time may vary depending on ambient temperature and humidity.
One or two coats of the Pro Matt Sanding Sealer spray is generally enough to seal the wood. More or fewer coats may be required depending on the porosity of the piece you are working on.

Basic Application:
This is the method we recommended for using our Professional Matt Sanding Sealer Spray for an even surface before final finishing.
– Sand your work down smooth to at least 400 grit and ensure surface is free from dust, grease and moisture. Clean the grain of dust if using (for example, ash);
– Shake can with the cap on for at least two minutes before use;
– Use appropriate PPE and apply in a well ventilated area. Protect lathe and surfaces;
– Using steady passes holding the can 200mm from the surface, apply an even coat;
– Once dry, we recommend lightly cutting back the surface for a smoother surface before applying subsequent coats;
– Apply a second coat of sealer and repeat above steps until surface is evenly coated;
– Before applying your final finish, lightly cut back the sealer once more to a create a smooth surface.

Professional Grade Sprays Coming Soon

We’ve long been looking to improve and expand our range of spray products and are pleased to say that we have completed that challenge.

For the last few months, and with a custom paint manufacturer, we have been quietly working out and trying out a range of sprays we are happy to call Professional. Each of the products has been formulated to produce a surface that satisfies what we would call professional requirements for strength and longevity in as few coats as possible.

There are 5 products in the range as in the image at the top of the page where they are shown in their mock-up labels.

  1. Professional Clear Gloss Lacquer
    Superb thick, nicely levelling product. Requires fewer coats for a deep, lush shine. Can be mechanically buffed after a few hours.
  2. Professional Clear Satin Lacquer
    Produces a superb satin finish on most surfaces in just two coats (over sealer) without further work required.
  3. Professional Black Gloss Lacquer
    Like the Clear Gloss, this black requires fewer coats for a fantastic depth of finish.
  4. Professional Black Satin Lacquer
    A silky smooth black surface over sealer can be produced in just a couple of coats. Use without sealer to preserve visible grain.
  5. Professional Matt Sanding Sealer
    An excellent spray-on sealer with plenty of solids providing a super-hard surface for any finish to be applied over the top.

Pricing will be made available shortly.

QR Codes On New Labels

We’re always looking for ways to improve our products and the latest move to get better is the introduction of QR codes on most of our product range.

A QR code is a two dimensional image that when scanned with a smartphone or other device can display text information like website URLs. The device will then convert a URL into a link that can be clicked and the website visited. It’s quicker than typing in an address into a browser.

We’ve started redesigning our labels to incorporate a QR code to take customers to the most appropriate page on our website for information and downloads of the product they are using.

Free Demos for Hampshire Sheen Retailers

As part of our customer service to our network of retailers, twice a year, we offer free demonstrations for their mailing list members. At the moment, Martin has teamed up with Les Thorne for a joint demo of tooling by Les and Hampshire Sheen use by Martin.

Ask your favorite Hampshire Sheen retailer to organise one for their customers. They really are free to attend!

On the evening of 14th June, Hampshire Sheen developer Martin Saban-Smith teamed up the one and only Les Thorne to present a free demonstration for mailing list members of their business, The Woodturning Shop. This short video is a selection of highlights from the second part of their presentation.

Over 180 viewers tuned in to Zoom to watch the the two professional turners 2 hours free presentation. Les turned an ornamental Ziricote bud vase after which Martin finished it in three different ways using a combination of Hampshire Sheen products – Pre-Thinned Cellulose Sanding Sealer, Microcrysalline Wax, Gloss Finishing Wax and a Carnacrystalline Stick.

The end result is a super shiny piece that will shine on for years without needing to be refinished, even after lots of handling.

In the second half, Les turned an ogee shaped platter that was finishing on the top with a viewer’s choice of Intrinsic Colours – Pear Green and Plum. Martin demonstrated how, with careful blending, even two colours from opposite sides of the colour wheel can be made to work together. This was then sealed and a coat of our Electric Blue Embellishing Wax was added to the grain.

Many thanks to Les Thorne for the turning aspect of the demonstration and to the viewers for all their questions.

Spring and Summer Cleaning

For the past few months, possibly even a year or so, I’ve been concentrating my efforts on a related business – The Woodturning Shop – but now I am refocusing some efforts on Hampshire Sheen.

I am heading over the SWAT in August as a lead demonstrator, Denmark in September and also a visit to our newest distributor in Sweden in September or October.

With plenty of potential new customers, I need to ensure that Hampshire Sheen is not just a company that manufactures excellent products – I want to ensure the company offers more bang for the buck.

The next month or so will see me working on a large copy writing and photography spree for new customer materials to help, advise and inspire our users. More on this in due course.

Also, the Excellence in Finishing Course will be revisited in further online demonstrations. Not the marathon demos as seen during Covid and October ’21, but a selection of shorter demonstration lessons focusing on a small number of products during each one.

Already, the website has been slimmed down and rewritten in places to make it more concise and information. There will be more to follow on this, too.

I’ve left it too long, but now the summer is coming, it is time to clean it up and step it up.

Out With the Old

Since the start of Covid way back in 2020, our usual bottles for our Danish and Burnishing Oils and Sanding Sealer have become progressively harder to source when we need them, so it was time for a change.

Working with our UK based manufacturer, we have started using a shorter 500ml bottle with a ‘berg’ closure which is easier to open than the older metal sealer.

We’ve also re-designed the labels to improve product continuity. We’re very happy with how they look.

Here’s a comparison of the old and new bottles side by side:

The new bottles will be starting to go out to retailers in the next week or so.

125ml Box Sets Returning October ’21

Our super and popular 125ml Box of Intrinsic Colours is making a comeback this autumn and will be available between October and December.

This box of colourful joy has an RRP of under £50 making it an ideal seasonal gift for the budding woodturning colourist!

Check with your local Hampshire Sheen retailer for stock information. Find them all at www.hampshiresheen.com/buy.

Free Excellence in Finishing Courses

The last time Hampshire Sheen developer Martin presented an Excellence in Finishing Course was during the Covid lockdown in mid 2020 after the in-person courses had to be cancelled. A newly revised and improved course is back for two free online presentations this October.

These two Zoom events will be the most comprehensive Hampshire Sheen finishing courses Martin has ever presented. There will be a lot more detail on each of the products used than before using on screen illustrations and he will share with you my tips and tricks for getting the best of out of the products on different species of wood.

Primarily, Martin will be sharing with you the recommended (and in some cases, advanced) methods of using the core products in the Hampshire Sheen Range: Gloss Finishing Wax, Microcrystalline Wax, Cellulose Sanding Sealer, Embellishing Waxes as well as the Danish Oil and brand new Citrus Burnishing Oil and where and when to use each of them.

We will also look at finishing techniques over the Intrinsic Colour Collection which will also include applying and polishing the Hampshire Sheen lacquers.

By the time the course finishes, you will be equipped with the knowledge to apply the finishes to bring the best out of your turned items, and be in the perfect position to get fanatical about finishing!

Those who stay for the whole course will receive a personal Certificate of Excellence different to the Extraordinary Course on YouTube last year, and different again from the in-person ones from before that!

The are two online courses to choose from that will be hosted in a Zoom meeting:

Saturday 9th October 10am – 2pm (UK);
Tuesday 19th October 6pm – 10pm (UK).

Please allow 4 hours to complete the course and there are a maximum of 500 seats available on each (though it is unlikely to sell out).

If you have any queries about the course, please contact us and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Bookings for the course are being taken at www.msabansmith.com as this site does not have a booking capability.
